MADISON, Wi (WKOW) - According to multiple reports, quarterback Danny O'Brien is now a former Badger. O'Brien has decided to leave UW after learning he would likely be 5th on the Badgers quarterback depth chart to start fall camp. It was just last year O'Brien was heralded as potentially the next "big" transfer quarterback from the ACC following in the footsteps of Russell Wilson. But O'Brien struggled on the field. He started the first three games for the Badgers last year. After a decent showing in last year's opener against Northern Iowa, he lost his starting job after fumbling twice in the Badgers loss at Oregon State and struggled to move the ball in week three against Utah State. O'Brien was replaced by Joel Stave and never re-gained his starting job. This fall, the Badgers have Stave along with Curt Phillips, juco transfer Tanner McEvoy, and Bart Houston likely ahead of O'Brien on the UW quarterback depth chart.
O'Brien tells www.badgernation.com "the football thing didn't work out but i have no regrets."
Given his full release, O'Brien hopes to have a final decision made in the next few weeks, and will be playing for his fifth head coach in four seasons.
