U.S. Senate approves 2013 Farm Bill

Posted:

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- The U.S. Senate approved a new version of the Farm Bill.

The 5-year, $500 billion bill would expand subsidies for crop insurance and make small cuts to the food stamp program.

Wisconsin's senators were split on the vote. Democrat Sen. Tammy Baldwin voted for the bill and Republican Sen. Ron Johnson voted against it.

"Wisconsin's family farmers have been an engine for our state's economy for generations. The farm bill makes important investments in our rural communities and supports an industry critical to our state's economy," Baldwin said. "I was proud to work across party lines and support this legislation because it will help move Wisconsin's economy forward."

"I voted against the Farm Bill. Its positive provisions, such as improved risk management, are outweighed by negative ones, such as government regulated dairy supply management and sugar subsidies," said Johnson. "I hope the Senate can soon begin work on legislation that genuinely addresses the real problems that farm and dairy families are dealing with every day."

The House of Representatives is working on its own legislation and it's expected to take it up as early as this month.

The old Farm Bill expired last year.
