School bus hits man helping turtle cross road

EAGLE (WKOW) -- A field trip turned traumatic for nearly 50 kids in Waukesha County on Monday.

The school bus in which they were riding hit a 70-year-old man who was trying to help a turtle cross the road.

The bus was heading to a nature preserve when it hit the man on Highway 59 just west of Eagle.

The local sheriff's department says the driver hit the brakes but couldn't avoid the man.

The 70-year-old was taken to the hospital.

He's expected to survive.

The principal of the school children on board says teachers on the bus went into crisis mode.

"The teachers did very well. They made sure first of all that the children were fine, and asked them to stay calm, they started going row by row, asking them how are they feeling," said principal Miguel Sanchez.

None of the students were hurt.

The turtle also survived the crash.
