Equal Pay Act turns 50

Posted:

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- Monday marked the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act.

President John F. Kennedy signed the law in the first government effort to balance pay between genders.

President Obama observed the anniversary by calling for the law to be strengthened.

He's says it's especially important now as more women become the breadwinner for their families.

"If they're bringing home more income and that income is less than fair share that means families have less to get by on for childcare or health care or gas or groceries," stated the president.

Right now, women make about 77 cents to every dollar a made by men.
