Health plan shows progress, but long road ahead

Chippewa Falls (WQOW) - A local health department says they're seeing progress on a four year plan to curb areas of high health risk.

Tuesday night the Chippewa County Health Department is updating the county board on the progress the department has made in its first year.

Some of the challenges the health department is working on include obesity, drug and alcohol use and mental health.

The health director says they're making slow progress on these challenges because prevention takes time and community support.

"But it at least sets us on the right track, to be going the right direction.  Focusing on some of the major causes of other health problems," says Chippewa County Public Health director Jean Durch.

Chippewa County will be holding an early childhood mental health summit this fall where they hope to identify and treat some disorders before they become problematic later in life.

The director says a lot of public health issues stack on top of each other, for example drug and alcohol use can intensify mental health problems.
