Shipwreck discovery on Lake Superior

MARQUETTE (WKOW) -- There's been an incredible discovery, 500 feet below the surface of Lake Superior.

A team of shipwreck hunters from Wisconsin and Minnesota believe they've found the Henry B. Smith freighter near Marquette.

The ship went down almost 100 years ago.

Loaded with ore in 1913, it headed out for Cleveland, right into the path of a storm.

30 foot waves and 70 mile an hour winds took down 17 ships, including the Smith.

In all, 250 sailors were killed.

Only one body was recovered.

There are plans to continue exploring the ship and analyzing exactly how it sank.
