Madison Fire Dept. focuses on fitness for the job

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Fire Department has officially been named the "biggest losers."

That's because they held a strength and weight loss challenge this year to improve health and wellness. Staying fit and healthy is an important part of a firefighter's job. As a department they lost over 1,000 pounds. Now, they're working to continue to stay fit and cut bad food habits.

Aaron Zamzow, a firefighter with the Madison Fire Department, organized this challenge for people to understand how important it is to "stay fit for the job."

Some of the fire department's gear weighs 70 to 80 pounds. Zamzow says they need to stay fit in order to use all this gear. Zamzow will demonstrate how taxing the job can be, ways to stay "fit for duty" and the successes and struggles of the fitness challenge.
