Sen. Ron Johnson says Obamacare is bigger threat to freedom than PRISM

MADISON (WKOW) -- Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) defends the National Security Agency's secret collection of data on U.S. citizens, saying it is less of a threat to our freedoms than Obamacare.

Sen. Johnson spoke from Washington, D.C. with 27 News Capitol Bureau Chief Greg Neumann, for a segment that will air Capitol City Sunday this weekend.

Sen. Johnson approves of the NSA's PRISM surveillance program, saying its important to balance our civil liberties with our safety.

"I think the far greater threats to our liberty is just the ever-expanding and encroaching federal government - one that right now is basically trying to run 23 percent of our economy," said Sen. Johnson.

While Sen. Johnson is critical of expansions such as Obamacare, he is in agreement with President Barack Obama on the importance of protecting PRISM and believes that starts with finding NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

"We should try to find out where Mr. Snowden is and take him into custody and he should, in the end, he should be responsible for his actions," said Sen. Johnson.

The Senate voted to debate an immigration reform bill earlier this week, which Sen. Johnson supported.  He has moved closer to the political center on that issue.

"I wish anybody who right now is very anti immigration bill, could just come and sit down and listen to the individuals that I'm meeting with, the people who are trapped up in this horribly broken system.  The young children who are concerned about their father being deported, " said Sen. Johnson.

But there are still certain things Sen. Johnson wants to see in a final immigration bill if he's going to support it.

"The bill's got to have very strong border security provisions," said Sen. Johnson.  And again, that's not just for illegal immigration, its also a national security issue."
