Madison homicide victim identified, husband cooperating

MADISON (WKOW) --- The Dane County Medical Examiner has identified the victim killed in Wednesday night's homicide as 25-year-old Julia Stacey Majette.

The preliminary autopsy shows Majette died from gunshot wounds.

Police say Majette's husband, who was shot and wounded, is now cooperating with police.

Authorities say Majette's husband, 34-year old Daunte Vance, initially stonewalled police detectives. Vance was a fugitive at the time of the shooting, wanted in Waukesha County in a misdemeanor drug case.

Vance was also shot and wounded in 2007 in Fitchburg. Court records show when officers arrived in the 22-hundred block of Highway MM April 2, Vance was covered with blood, and was taken by MedFlight helicopter to UW Hospital.

Authorities say Vance and another man broke into a Madison home, and Vance's accomplice was believed to have shot Vance later after a dispute.

Records show that man, Marcus Canady was convicted of a federal weapons charge, and sentenced to ten years in prison in January 2008.

Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson Chris Burke tells 27 News Canady was released from a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, to another's jurisdiction's custody three weeks ago.

Burke says the release was based on the need for Canady to offer testimony, or face other criminal charges, but declines to comment further.  A Dane County sheriff's official says Canady is not in the local jail.

Madison police spokesperson Joel DeSpain says no suspects in Wednesday's shooting have been identified.

DeSpain says two men targeted the shooting victims.

For neighbor Sharon Fedele, the singling out of Majette is stunning.

"She was a wonderful girl," Fedele says.

"Why her? That's what's so sad," Fedele tells 27 News.

DeSpain says the shootings were carried out in front of two of the couple's three young children.

"Those poor little kids that had to witness that," Fedele says. "It breaks my heart."

Friends say Majette worked with assisted living clients.

Majette missed a required court appearance hours before the shooting, but authorities have released no information on whether any activities before the violence were connected to the shooting.
