Loved ones celebrate the life of a beloved Madison couple killed in a crash

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW)-- Hundreds packed Mitby Theater at Madison College Saturday afternoon to celebrate the lives of Al and Jan Studesville. The couple died earlier this month in a motorcycle accident while on vacation in Texas.

"It's a celebration of their life and accomplishments," longtime friend Enis Ragland says.

Friends say the couple's many accomplishments touched every part of the Madison community. From Al's work with 100 Black Men, providing scholarships and mentorships to Madison's youth, to Jan's work with Women in Focus.

"Their personalities were vibrant. The way they helped people, that's just them," Al's brother Donald Studesville says.

Saturday afternoon's celebration lasted several hours. It was emotional at times and comedic at others, especially when Madison Mayor Paul Soglin explained why he and several other friends decided to wear Hawaiian shirts in honor of Al and his fun personality.

"My wife asked me if that's really what I was going to were. I said I got the memo, and I know Al," Soglin laughs.

The couple's only son Eric, a running back coach for the Denver Broncos, received several bouquets of flowers from NFL teams to show their support. Flowers came from the Oakland Raiders, New York Giants, Chicago Bears, and Minnesota Vikings just to name a few.

Friends say his parent's love followed Eric everywhere he went. Many people who had never even met Al and Jan were inadvertently touched by their love.

"If you saw one you saw the other one. They were just a wonderful loving and caring couple," longtime friend Edith Lawrence Hilliard says.

Al and Jan Studesville died on June 4th in a motorcycle accident near Amarillo Texas. The driver of a tractor trailer crossed the center line and hit them head on.
