UPDATE: Milwaukee casino reopens after early morning shooting

Posted:

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- A 27-year-old man has been arrested after shooting a woman in the leg during a fight at Potawatomi Bingo Casino early Sunday morning.

The shooting happened on the casino floor around 1:30 a.m., creating a pretty chaotic scene.

Police say some witnesses were hurt in a stampede of people trying to get out.

"I just heard people running and shouting 'somebody is shooting. Somebody is shooting.'  And it was like what what. Then everybody got off of the machines and were running," says Patricia Wesley.

De Von Dent says he and three other men helped wrestle the gun out of the shooter's hand after the woman was shot. He also tied a shirt around her leg to stop the bleeding.

"She wasn't screaming but you could tell she was in shock, she had been shot in her thigh, she was shaking I guess she was just scared and nervous and a lot of trembling," says Dent.

The 23-year-old victim was taken to a hospital. She's expected to recover.

A Potawatomi spokesperson said in a statement that the casino closed temporarily after the shooting, but reopened at 9 a.m. The spokesperson said this is the first shooting to happen inside the casino, but in 2011 shots were fired outside the building.

Employees tell 27 News the casino does not have metal detectors, but there are security guards on duty and "no weapons" signs posted at every entrance.
