Two killed in a plane crash on Madeline Island

ASHLAND COUNTY (WKOW) -- A plane crash on Madeline Island in northwestern Wisconsin resulted in the death of two people.

The Ashland County Sheriff's Office says the crash was reported around 6:30 p.m. on June 15th.  La Pointe police responded and found the plane on fire in a heavily wooded area close to the airport runway.  The plane reportedly was attempting to land when it went down.

The Duluth News Tribune said the weather was good at the airport and talked with Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Roland Herwig, who said the plane was a single-engine plane Piper PA-24 Comanche.

The names of the victims have not been released.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are still investigating.
