Drunk Janesville teacher's actions reported by other staff

Posted:

JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- A Janesville police official says a drunken teacher's actions during a school field trip were reported by other teachers to a school principal, who intervened.

Janesville Police detective Kyle Austin tells 27 News other teachers on the field trip of fourth and fifth graders to a Janesville bowling center smelled alcohol on teacher Maria Caya.

Austin says some teachers also saw Caya involved in "unusual behavior."  Austin did not specify what Caya was doing.

Austin tells 27 News two teachers contacted the principal of Washington Elementary School, who came to the bowling center in response to their concerns.

Authorities say Caya's blood alcohol level was .27, more than three times the legal limit for driving.

Authorities say Caya told them she was drinking at 6 a.m., before the school field trip. A representative of the bowling center says Caya was not served alcohol during the student event.

Austin says police officials are recommending no criminal charges be filed against Caya, noting there was not evidence of child neglect or other offenses, because field trip students were supervised by other teachers and chaperones. Austin says no police reports have been forwarded to Rock County District Attorney David O'Leary.

Janesville school officials have said the 50-year old Caya's actions will be reviewed.
