Xcel Energy customers being targeted by scammers

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) - A warning about scams targeting customers of Xcel Energy. The utility says scammers are posing as Xcel employees.

In some cases they tell customers they are about to lose service unless they go to the store and buy a pre-paid cash card, then give out the number from the card over the phone. Xcel says the scammers sometimes offer to come to their home to pick up payment.

And in some cases they have been able to make the customer's caller ID indicate that the call is actually from Xcel.

Xcel says other scams include telling customers they have a refund coming, then requesting bank information to complete the refund.

Customers are being asked to report anything suspicious by calling Xcel at 1-800-895-4999.
