Red Cross prepares for blood shortage

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Red Cross says it is seeing a drop in blood donations.

The organization says this is typical during the summer months, but many don't realize how great an impact it truly has.

"We get about on average maybe two less donors at every blood drive, which doesn't sound like a lot but actually amounts... up to 100,000 donations across the country for those three months," said Red Cross communications manager, Bobbi Snethen.

The Red Cross is hoping to avert the shortage this year by involving the community.

As part of its "Red Cross Summer of Stories Campaign", every blood donor from July 1-15 will be entered to win one of five $3,000 American Express gift cards.

Right now, the Red Cross says its blood supply is sufficient but will dwindle as the summer goes by. It says platelet donations are always needed.
