Officials warn about sweepstake scam

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection is warning Wisconsin residents of calls claiming to be Publishers Clearing House.

Callers are told they have won a sweepstakes prize.  Scammers ask for a fee payable with a pre-paid debit card.

The state says potential victims are directed to get a Green Dot MoneyPak debit card from a store in order to pay the fee.

Consumer protection officials say scammers chose this method because transactions are difficult to trace and nearly impossible to reverse.
