UW-Madison researchers discuss procedure that helped boy hear

MADISON (WKOW) -- You may have seen the video that quickly went viral this week. The moment 3-year-old Grayson Clamp heard his father's voice for the first time.

Grayson was born without nerve endings in his ear but he can now hear thanks to an experimental implant that stimulates his brain.

That procedure was part of the discussion on UW-Madison's campus Sunday. Medical professionals from across the country, as well as current and potential patients gathered at the Waisman Center.

"When we think in general about children who are deaf and could benefit from the opportunity to gain access to speech and to language be mainstreamed... there's a lot of excitement," Professor Ruth Litovsky says about the surgery Grayson received.

Litovsky also says researchers still don't know how well kids who get the procedure will be able to speak as they get older.
