Opening statements in Zimmerman trial today

SANDFORD (WKOW) – Opening statements are set in the trial of a neighborhood watch volunteer on Monday after he was charged with second-degree murder.

George Zimmerman is accused of fatally shooting an unarmed black teenager in central Florida.  Zimmerman says he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in self-defense.

Witnesses and family members are expected to testify in front of a jury made up of six women.  Zimmerman's lawyer hasn't said whether his client will take the stand.

A judge recently ruled a 911 call from the night Martin was killed cannot be used in court.

Prosecutors say Zimmerman profiled Martin as he walked through a community on a rainy night in February 2012 wearing a dark hooded shirt.

The initial decision not to charge Zimmerman led to public outrage and demonstrations around the nation.  Civil rights leaders and other accused Sanford police of failing to thoroughly  investigate the shooting.
