Fish experts discover cause of carp kills in Dane, Iowa counties

MADISON (WKOW) -- Fish experts at the Department of Natural Resources say they know what killed hundreds of fish in Dane and Iowa counties this month.

Hundreds of carp in Ludden Lake near Mineral Point and Marshall Millpond in Marshall died in June.

Fisheries expert David Rowe says the fish likely became infected with koi herpes virus when they were spawning and later developed a secondary bacterial infection. Results from testing at the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory are pending.

Rowe says the DNR is unsure how the virus got into the water, and advises anyone cleaning up dead fish to use a shovel or gloves.
