UWEC education building officially named

Eau Claire (Press Release) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's newest academic building, until now referred to as the Education Building, has officially been named Centennial Hall.

Interim Chancellor Gilles Bousquet selected Centennial Hall as the official name from a list of several choices forwarded to him by a building naming committee of university faculty, staff and students. The committee's suggestions were selected based on input from a survey that all students, faculty and staff were invited to complete.

"It's exciting to name this new facility Centennial Hall in anticipation of UW-Eau Claire's 2016 celebration of 100 years of excellence in teaching and learning," Bousquet said. "The centennial also will be a time to look to UW-Eau Claire's future as it continues its role as a leader and innovator in higher education. What better way to mark the path toward that future than with this state-of-the-art facility through which UW-Eau Claire will continue making a difference in the lives of students and in our region, Wisconsin and the world for years to come?"

Construction of the $44.5 million Centennial Hall is proceeding toward on-time completion in November 2013, with the first classes in the facility scheduled for spring semester 2014.

"UW-Eau Claire was founded almost 100 years ago as what was then called a 'normal' school, devoted to educating our region's teachers," said Dr. Gail Scukanec, dean of the university's College of Education and Human Sciences and chair of the campus building committee for the Centennial Hall project. "It's only fitting that Centennial Hall is the name we give this building which will house our teacher education program — as well as facilities that will serve our entire university — as we approach our 100-year anniversary."

The approximately 182,000-square-foot building, located between Schneider Hall and Zorn Arena, will house UW-Eau Claire's College of Education and Human Sciences administrative units; significant new classroom space for use by the entire campus; the departments of education studies, English, foreign languages and special education; and select student support services, including Services for Students with Disabilities, the Student Success Center and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
