Wisconsin improves job growth ranking, still trails national rate

MADISON (WKOW -- Wisconsin's rate of overall job growth, including public and private-sector jobs, was 1.2% in 2012, compared to the national average of 1.9%.
New numbers were released Thursday morning by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They show job growth for all 50 states between December 2011 and December 2012.

Over that year Wisconsin ranked 31st among states in percentage of overall job growth and 33rd in private-sector job growth.
The report shows in the first two years of Governor's Scott Walker's term, Wisconsin added just more than 62,000 private sector jobs.  Walker had promised to add 250,000 jobs during his term. That means halfway through his term he's about a quarter of the way there.

The numbers released today are based on the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages(QCEW), a survey that covers about 97-percent of state businesses.
Wisconsin's private-sector job growth of 1.4% in 2012 trails Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, and is little charged from the state's 1.5% private-sector growth in 2010 and 1.3% in 2011.
However, Wisconsin fares better compared to other states in this latest analysis. The previous QCEW showed Wisconsin ranked 44th in private-sector job creation between September 2011 and September 2012.
27 News Capitol Bureau Chief Greg Neumann will take a closer look at the numbers tonight in 27 News at 5 and 6.
