Boy hit by lightning at UW Hospital

MADISON (WKOW) -- An eight year old boy from the Wausau area is in a Madison hospital after being hit by lightning.

Authorities say he has serious burns.

He was hit by lightning while riding a mini-bike Wednesday evening on a relative's farm in Marathon County.

The lightning bolt knocked him unconscious and burned him on his shoulders and feet.

"I've been in the business for 28 years, and I've only heard of maybe one or two, so it doesn't happen very often," said Rib Mountain fire chief Paul Wirth.

Family members say the boy was unconscious at first, but his father used CPR to revive him.

Relatives say the boy is in UW Hospital's burn unit with second degrees burns on about fifteen percent of his body.
