Milwaukee Art Museum hosts tattoo exhibition

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) – The Milwaukee Art Museum is hosting its first tattoo art exhibition on Wednesday.

"Tattoo: Flash Art of Amund Dietzel!" will highlight the work of tattoo artist Amund Dietzel, who was born in Norway in 1891.

Dietzel learned hand tattooing on a merchant ship and after it wrecked off the coast of Quebec, Dietzel traveled with carnivals and sideshows.  He decided to become tattooed from neck to ankle and eventually opened a tattoo parlor in Milwaukee in 1913.

He quickly became the region's premier tattoo artist, working on World War I and World War II sailors and marines.  He worked up until 1967m when Milwaukee banned tattooing.

Dietzel died in 1974 and is buried in Milwaukee.
