Free cat adoption at Dane County Humane Society

Posted:

Are you looking for a pet? This may be your weekend. The Dane County Humane Society is having a free cat adoption. The shelter is nearing its cat capacity and desperately needs loving adoptive homes for the animals there now.

The event starts Friday June 28 and runs through Sunday. Potential pet-owners can get an adult cat, six months or older for free. Just talk with an adoption counselor and mention the "adoption guarantee" to be part of the deal.

The following locations are participating:

·         Main DCHS Shelter – 5132 Voges Road, Madison (Thurs & Friday 12pm-7pm; Sat & Sun 12pm – 5pm)
·         Adoption Center West – 7475 Mineral Point Road, Madison (Thurs & Friday 12pm-7pm; Sat & Sun 12pm – 5pm)
·         Mounds Adoption Center – Middleton – 8311 University Ave (Thurs & Fri 5pm-7pm; Sat & Sun 12pm-5pm)
·         Mounds Adoption Center – Sun Prairie – 2422 Montana Ave (Thurs & Fri 5pm-7pm; Sat & Sun 12pm-5pm)
·         Mounds Adoption Center –Janesville – 1725 Lodge Dr (Thurs & Fri 5pm-7pm; Sat & Sun 12pm-5pm)

DCHS entered into a 5-year Maddie's Fund collaborative grant with two local rescue groups in 2008, to pursue offering an "adoption guarantee" for homeless shelter cats and dogs.

"Adoption guarantee is defined as finding forever homes for all healthy and treatable/manageable dogs and cats," Gayle Viney, DCHS Public Relations Coordinator said. "Adoption guarantee gives a community confidence that an animal shelter is truly a shelter - when this happens, the community becomes an active partner in saving lives."

An animal that has a medical or behavioral condition that can be eliminated or managed long term is considered treatable/manageable.

April 2013 marked one year of the "adoption guarantee" at DCHS.
