Term limits suggested for WI Supreme Court justices

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- A panel of attorneys has recommended Wisconsin Supreme Court justices should be limited to one, longer term.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports the special task force from the state Bar of Wisconsin wants a constitutional amendment introduced this fall to change the system. Currently, justices serve 10-year terms, with no limit to how many terms a candidate can seek.

The panel says moving to a 16-year single term could help restore the public's confidence in the court that's experienced confrontational political campaigns.

Republican lawmakers weren't available for immediate comment but Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chris Larson calls the plan promising.
