State superintendent of schools singles out local district in speech

Madison (WQOW) - Tony Evers calls it an exciting and challenging time for public education.

The state superintendent of schools began his second four-year term on Monday and he was critical of the expansion of private school vouchers statewide.  "At the same time, the very idea of public education itself is being called into question.  In a state that has always prided itself on our strong public schools, educators have been declared enemies, communities have been divided, and resources have been drained.  At the state level, many of those in power have tied themselves up in knots about how to expand choices for the few, without focusing on their constitutional obligation to serve all Wisconsin students," said Supt. Evers.

Evers singled out a local school district during his state address on Monday.  He said the Cardinal Manufacturing program at Eleva-Strum is one story that embodies what public schools are all about.  Evers toured the school in February and saw the program, which focuses on metal fabrication.  The class is run like a business.  Students do everything from soliciting orders to the piece work to shipping.  The program has been recognized nationally through Modern Machine Shop Magazine.
