WI firefighters increasing safety measures after AZ tragedy

OCONTO FALLS (WKOW) -- Firefighters in Wisconsin say they are very aware of this weekend's tragedy in Arizona, and they're learning from it.

The firefighters in Arizona deployed what's called a fire shelter.

Oconto Falls ranger and wildland firefighter Chris Duncan says crews are trained to use them if they find themselves surrounded by flames.

"Basically if you are having to go to your fire shelter, everything else went bad," said Duncan. "It is your very last resort to try to save your life."

Duncan says firefighters are trained to get inside one of the shelters in less than 20 seconds.

Since Wisconsin's fire season is over, the DNR says crews are ready if they're asked to help with wildfires burning out of state.
