Operation Migration needs help replacing aircraft for Whooping crane migrations

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- A non-profit organization that helps endangered Whooping cranes migrate from Wisconsin to Florida needs help itself.

Operation Migration has been guiding new generations of Whooping cranes down south since 2001. The cranes are produced in captivity and begin an imprinting process with caretakers who carry puppets resembling adult Whooping cranes.

Eventually the caretakers, dressed as cranes, use small aircrafts to guide them on a 1200 mile journey in the fall.

The planes used by Operation Migration need to be replaced to comply with current FAA regulations, so a crowdfunding campaign was established in hopes the public with help with donations.

To help Operation Migration, head to http://igg.me/at/whoop. Or check out its homepage, which includes an online webcam to view the young Whooping cranes.
