MADISON (WKOW) -- We're seeing some relief at the pump just in time for the 4th of July holiday.
On Tuesday in Madison, the average for a gallon of gas was down to $3.40, while the state average was $3.45. Both are below the national average of $3.50 per gallon.
"I'm really happy to see the gas prices going down, usually the 4th of July weekend they're going the other direction," said Bob Johnson after he filled up his tank.
Driver Amanda McKay said even when gas prices were higher, it didn't change her family's travel plans.
"We didn't really cut back, it's more important for us to spend time with the family than watch the gas prices," she said.
Officials are reminding everyone to be patient while driving over the holiday.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says peak travel is expected between noon and 8 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.
