Rising waters force WI park to close campgrounds

MADISON (WKOW) –Wisconsin officials have closed several campgrounds at Merrick State Park as the Mississippi River rises.

The Department of Natural Resources says the river is near its crest after a wave of recent rain.  The rain is not expected to recede for about a week so the agency decided to take precaution and close the south, group and island campgrounds at the park.

The DNR hopes to re-open them by mid-July, if we don't see another wave of rain. The park's north campground will remain open.

The park is located adjacent to the Mississippi River in southwestern Wisconsin about 40 miles north of La Crosse.
