Fireworks employee injured during show

HALES CORNERS (WKOW) -- A suburban Milwaukee fireworks show was cut short after a fireworks employee was injured.

It happened about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday. Four bursts of fireworks were fired from a wooded area. Spectators saw flashing lights after the bursts.

Hales Corners police say the man suffered a fractured leg, after a firework unexpectedly exploded on the ground. The man was taken to a local hospital.

Witnesses say they knew something was wrong when they saw the explosion.

"You could look through the whole woods the way it lit up.  You couldn't see the guy in there but you could see the whole woods light up through the trees.  You knew right away something was wrong," said witness John Thoennes.

The rest of the show was canceled.

Police destroyed the remaining fireworks. They say they're investigating the explosion as an accident.
