Racine man linked to 2002 sexual assault from DNA sample

RACINE (WKOW) -- Racine County prosecutors say a DNA from a 2012 conviction connected a Racine man to a sexual assault case from 2002.

A Journal Times of Racine report says 36-year-old Angel L. Cartagena faces a charge of second-degree sexual assault.  Prosecutors say his DNA matched samples taken in 2002 after a sexual assault.

A woman told police she had been walking home at 4:30 a.m. when a man knocked her down, banged her head on concrete, and sexually assaulted her.

Prosecutors say Cartagena was linked to this sexual assault after he provided a DNA sample for a conviction of mistreating an animal in October 2012.

Cartagena's defense attorney has not commented.

A preliminary hearing is set for July 10.
