Milwaukee Co. courthouse closed after weekend fire

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- The Milwaukee County Courthouse and Public Safety Building will be closed for a few days because of damage from a fire in the building's basement.

Parts of downtown Milwaukee were without power, including the responding fire station that had to use a generator to open its garage doors.

Investigators believe the fire started Saturday afternoon in a utility room that housed electrical equipment.

"In the last two years, we've spent a lot of time trying to catch up and modernize and we're getting to things as fast as we can," says Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele. "Obviously this will prompt a redo in a lot of the electrical in this building."

Court cases scheduled for Monday and Tuesday will be postponed and Waukesha County's dispatch center will handle all 911 calls to Milwaukee County.
