UPDATE: Rescuers may have run over plane crash victim

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (WKOW) -- Officials are conducting an autopsy to determine whether one of the victims who died in the San Francisco plane crash was run over and killed by a rescue vehicle.

San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault says fire officials notified his office at the crash site on Saturday that one of the 16-year-old girls may have been struck on the runway.

Foucrault says he did not get a close enough look at the victims on Saturday to know whether they had external injuries.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death is expected to be completed by Monday.

The girls have not been identified yet but authorities say they were both 16-years-old and visiting the U.S. from China. The victims were found outside the airplane.

More than 181 people were taken to the hospital. Five are reported in critical condition. More than 300 people were on the flight.

The crash is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board. On Sunday, federal officials said the pilots of Asiana Flight 214 were flying too slowly as the approached the airport Saturday.

NTSB chief Deborah Hersman says the Boeing 777 pilots were warned that the jetliner could stall, and attempted to abort the landing a few seconds before the crash. The normal response to a stall warning is to increase speed to recover control, Hersman says.
