Scammers pose as utility workers

MADISON (WKOW) -- Dozens of Madison residents have received suspicious phone calls from a person claiming to be with a local utility.  In some cases, the caller demands hundreds of dollars for a water meter repair or upgrade.

Madison Water Utility in currently in the process of upgrading their meters across the city, as part of the Project H2O advanced metering infrastructure system, however, the standard upgrade is free of charge.

Madison Water Utility says they will never demand a customer wire money or reveal bank or credit card account information over the phone.  All employees, when visiting homes to install the new system, wear Madison Water Utility-issued photo IDs.

If you are contacted by someone who you believe may be posing as a utility employee, please report the incident to the Madison Police Department.
