Air Guard member bound over for trial in Mauston homicide case

MAUSTON (WKOW) -- A member of the Wisconsin Air National Guard was bound over for trial Monday in connection with the shooting death of a Mauston woman, and the wounding of her friend.

Just before Juneau County Judge Paul Curran determined evidence existed to bind 29-year old Cody Treul over for trial, Treul's attorney, David Geraghty indicated the possibility of a plea of not guilty by mental disease or defect for Treul would be explored.

Authorities say Treul fatally shot 29-year old Gail Howland and wounded 23-year old Ebony Lasher outside a Mauston bar May 31. Lasher told 27 News Howland was in the process of breaking off a romantic relationship with Treul when the shooting took place.

Juneau County sheriff's detective Shawn Goyette testified witnesses said Treul pointed his gun at several people in a bar courtyard before shooting Howland and Lasher.

Sheriff's deputy Michael Coughlin testified he transported Treul after the shooting.

Coughlin testified Treul spoke with him briefly. "He asked, 'Who did I kill?' " Coughlin testified.

Geraghty says he will consult with a psychologist and review police reports in preparation for a possible plea involving Treul's mental health.

Victim Ebony Lasher's mother, Pam Kissner tells 27 News a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect by Treul would be a miscarriage of justice.

"He knew what he was doing," Kissner tells 27 News.

"He went to one bar looking for them, and went to another bar looking for them. He knew exactly what he was doing."

Goyette says a preliminary autopsy report shows Howland was shot ten times.

Treul's arraignment is scheduled for August 28.

MAUSTON (WKOW) --- 29-year-old Cody Treul of Mauston has been bound over for trial on three felony charges.

Those charges include first degree intentional homicide and attempted first degree homicide.

Treul faces the charges for allegedly shooting and killing Gayle Howland and wounding Ebony Lasher on May 31st outside a Mauston bar.

Tony Galli will have more on this case on 27 News at 5 & 6.
