2013 US Open Beer Grand National Champion: Capital Brewery

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Middleton brewery can now add Grand National Champion to its collection of awards.

Capital Brewery Co., Inc. was named the Grand National Champ at the prestigious 2013 U.S. Open Beer Championship.  The brewery nabbed three gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

More than 2500 beer entries representing 68 different categories were sampled at the Open by judges from England, Canada and the United States. Over 20 international breweries from Germany, Belgium, England, Canada, Mexico, Columbia, Sweden, and Finland received medals in the competition held in June.  Capital, however, was tops.

"This competition is significant because it accepts entries from breweries around the world," said Dow Scoggins, director of the U.S. Open Beer Championships. "We're excited that one of the oldest craft breweries in the United States won.  Capital Brewery was founded in 1984, when only a handful of craft breweries existed in America."

Winning the gold were Capital Pilsner, Dark and the recently released Lake House.  Wisconsin Amber won a silver medal and both Supper Club and Maibock won bronze medals adding to their collection of awards.

Brewmaster Brian Destree stated, "This recognition is a great honor, and is the result of the hard work and diligence that each of our brewers display on a daily basis. Without their attention to detail, our brands would not receive the awards they consistently do. I raise a glass and say ‘Cheers' to our success!"
