UPDATE: Traffic flowing smoothly after multiple crashes on 53 bypass


Press Release from the Altoona Police Department: 

On July 8, 2013 beginning at 3:43 PM, a crash occurred on US 53 Northbound north of the Altoona City Limits and is being investigated by Eau Claire County Sheriff's Office.  The Sheriff's Office has previously issued a media release on this.

At approximately 4:05 PM a second crashed occurred on US 53 at approximately the 88.6 mile marker.  This resulted in property damage.

A third crash took place during these other crash events on US 53 near the River Prairie exit.  Three vehicles were involved and resulted in two injuries.  This crash remains under investigation of Altoona Police.

These crashes resulted in temporary lane closures on northbound US 53.


Press Release from the Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department:

On 07-08-13 at approximately 3:43 p.m. Eau Claire County Deputies responded to the 9000 block of 53 Freeway reference to a single vehicle roll over crash. The lone vehicle occupant was transported to an area hospital for evaluation. The crash investigation is on-going at this time.

As a result of the initial crash, subsequent crashes occurred on the freeway, in the jurisdiction of the City of Altoona.

The Eau Claire Sheriff's Office was assisted by; Wisconsin State Patrol, City of Altoona Police, City of Eau Claire Police, Eau Claire Fire & Rescue, City of Altoona Fire and Township Fire Department.


Eau Claire County (WQOW) - Multiple crashes on Highway 53 Monday afternoon sent at least one person to the hospital and backed up traffic for around an hour. Traffic was moving smoothly around 5:45 pm.

The Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department says the first accident happened around 4:00 p.m. just south of the North Crossing on the Highway 53 freeway. The female driver of the car rolled her vehicle. She was taken to the hospital. Her name and condition are not being released.

Then a few minutes later, Altoona crews responded to at least 2 more accidents near the River Prairie Drive exit on Highway 53. There's no word on any injuries from that crash. The Eau Claire Police Department's community relations officer says there was significant road blockage.


Eau Claire (WQOW) - Traffic is backed up on the Highway 53 bypass Monday night after a rollover crash.

The crash happened near River Prairie Drive. Three cars may have been involved and at this point, we don't know whether anyone was seriously hurt.  

A few exits are blocked off as crews investigate and try to clear the scene.  

Eau Claire police are asking people to avoid the area for now.
