Furloughs begin at Ft. McCoy

TOMAH (WKOW) -- It's a little quieter these days at Fort McCoy in west central Wisconsin.

Federal furloughs began this week due to the sequester.

1,500 civilian employees will take off one unpaid day each week for the next 11 weeks.

Some offices will be halfway staffed on Mondays and Fridays, while others will be closed an extra day each week.

"It is frustrating and primarily it's frustrating because we all want to do the work that we're required to do. We're being asked to stay home and we know there's this work that needs to be done," said spokeswoman Linda Fournier.

The cutbacks might not end with this fiscal year.

Sequestration is a 10-year plan, so unless Congress reaches a deal, furloughs may come around again in 2014.
