Menomonie (Press Release) - A recent University of Wisconsin-Stout graduate led all members of his regiment in Army Physical Fitness Training at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Tim Nelson, of Augusta, was the male champion out of 445 members of the 10th Regiment.

The testing, held Thursday, July 4, consisted of a two-mile run, two minutes of pushups and two minutes of situps. Nelson completed the run in 9 minutes, 15 seconds. He did 110 pushups and 113 situps.

In addition to leading his regiment, Nelson had the second best male score overall for 12 of the 13 regiments that had completed testing as of Tuesday, according to the U.S. Army Cadet Command. His total score of 405 points was two pushups short of the top score.

Cadets must score at least 60 points in each event to qualify for the Army.

Nelson is a member of the Army ROTC Northwoods Battalion based at UW-Stout. He expects to be commissioned as an officer in August. ROTC stands for Reserve Officer Training Corps.

In the spring he received the NCAA Division III Academic All-America of the Year male award for track and field and cross country. He had a 3.7 grade-point average as a business administration major.

Athletically, he won four NCAA Division III national titles while at UW-Stout, three in track in spring 2012 and one in cross country in fall 2012.

He received numerous other school, conference and national honors during his academic and athletic careers.
