11-year-old drowns in retention pond


HILBERT (WKOW) – Authorities say an 11-year-old boy has drowned while swimming in a retention pond in a Calumet County Tuesday afternoon.

Officials identified the victim as Jacob Meronek.  He was swimming with his 9-year-old brother in Hilbert when he went under the water and never re-surfaced. 

The Calumet County dive team found the boy in about 8 feet of water.

According to WLUK-TV, the boy was taken to the Calumet Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
