Chinese scientist to enter plea in WI drug theft

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) – A researcher accused of stealing a possible cancer-fighting compound is expected to plead guilty to a reduced computer-related charge on Wednesday.

Hua Jun Zhao was accused of stealing three vials of the compound from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Zhao initially plead not guilty to tampering with a private computer and lying to a federal agent, but court records say he will change his plea.  The plea agreement says Zhao will plead guilty to accessing a computer without permission, which carries a fine of $250,000 and is punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

Defense attorney Michelle Jacobs says she expects the hearing will conform to the plea agreement.

Prosecutors say he also stole academic research that he planned to pass of as his own in China.
