Gogebic Taconite suspends the use of some armed guards at mine site

Posted:
MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) tells 27 News that Bulletproof Securities, one of the private companies providing security at Gogebic Taconite's mining site in northern Wisconsin, has been practicing without the required state license.

Gogebic Taconite tells WKOW Capitol Bureau Chief Greg Neumann the company will remove all Bulletproof Securities' guards until the company obtains the proper license from DSPS.

A spokesperson for DSPS says Bulletproof has contacted the agency about its intention to submit a license application.  Once the application is submitted to DSPS, approval should take 2-3 days.  Gogebic says Bulletproof Securities guards will be back to work at the site upon approval.

But under Wisconsin law, any company convicted of providing private security without a license is ineligible for a license for one year.  27 News has asked DSPS if it will enforce that penalty on Bulletproof Securities, but the agency has yet to respond.
