Homeland Security Chief Napolitano stepping down

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is stepping down to take a senior position in the University of California system, U.S. officials say.

Napolitano announced her move to staffers on Friday, saying she was leaving for California.

Napolitano has led the department since the beginning of the Obama administration, just the third person to hold this post.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because her resignation had not been announced publicly.
