Driver charged in crash that killed local dentist

Chippewa County (WQOW) - New details are being revealed about the investigation into a crash that killed a bicyclist.

On Friday, charges were filed against Krista Holler, who's from Cadott.  She was charged with homicide by drunk driving and negligent operation of a vehicle.

Investigators believe she was driving a car that hit Dr. Robert Tschabrun while he was biking early in the morning on June 1st.  It happened on County Highway G, west of Stanley.  They also say Holler abandoned her car, left the scene of the crash and did not notify authorities.

Dr. Tschabrun's body was found in a ditch near the car more than three hours after the crash.  The red lights on his helmet were still flashing.  There was a Garmin GPS device on his bike that shows the exact time of the crash (5:24 a.m.).  It also shows he was going north.  Investigators believe Holler was driving south on G, left the south lane, crossed into the other lane and hit Tschabrun head on.  Holler claims she swerved to miss a deer before going into the ditch.

Court records show she left work at 10:30 p.m. the night before and went to a bar in Chippewa Falls until 2:15 a.m.  She then left and went to the Maple Hill bar in Chippewa County where the bartender said she served Holler two bottles of beer and five shots.  She doesn't remember Holler leaving, but says in her opinion, Holler was in no condition to drive.  Holler later called after the crash.  The bartender said, she and a few others went to pick her up at the site of the crash and brought Holler back to the bar.  Investigators say she also texted her mother after the crash, at 5:58 a.m., saying she just hit a deer.  Investigators interviewed her that afternoon.  She blew a .04, eight hours after the crash.

Court records show she has two prior OWI convictions.  She'll make her first court appearance on Tuesday.

Tschabrun was 71 years old.
