LA mayor: 13 arrested in city's Zimmerman protests

LOS ANGELES (WKOW) – Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti says violence and vandalism in city streets has resulted in 13 arrests in protests over George Zimmerman's acquittal in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin.

At a press conference with Garcetti on Monday, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck says about 150 people broke off from a larger, peaceful protest and began walking the streets and committing multiple acts of vandalism and several assaults.  Authorities did not elaborate on the severity of the assaults or potential injuries.

Beck also says more than 300 officers were called to the scene and directly engaged with the protesters in an attempt to allow a peaceful end to the demonstration.

If protestors continue for another night, Beck says police would take a much stricter posture.
