Nelson Mandela Celebrates 95th Birthday

SOUTH AFRICA (WKOW) – Along with the world, Nelson Mandela will celebrate his 95th Birthday on Thursday.

Many gathered in the streets of Pretoria to send well wishes to Mandela, as he continues to recuperate from a lung ailment he has been battling since June.

Mandela, a Nobel Peace Laureate, spent 27 years in prison for fighting against oppression of minorities in South Africa.

He became the nation's first black president in 1994, just four years after he was released from prison.

Mandela's Foundation is asking people to take part in at least 67 minutes of public service on Thursday because it is the number of years he has devoted to public service.
