More utility fraud to look out for

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police are warning of more fraudsters under the guise of utility workers.

This time it involves Madison Gas and Electric bill payments. Targets are told their power will be cut off immediately if payment isn't made.

Officials say several of these calls were made to downtown businesses. One victim even loaded $500 onto a Green Dot Moneypak card from Walgreens. He was told to call MG&E at 608-721-0610 and provide a representative with the card's 14-digit code. After doing this, the owner realized he had been scammed.

An MPD detective working on similar cases has traced the phone number to Puerto Rico.

Earlier this month, Madison Water Utility warned of phone calls from people posing as workers demanding money for a water meter repair or upgrade.

Neither company would require a customer to wire money or reveal bank or credit card information over the phone.

Anyone who receives a call like either of these should alert Madison Police right away.
