MADISON -- Wisconsin men's hockey head coach Mike Eaves announced the signing of forward Aidan Cavallini Thursday, making the forward the fifth member of the Badgers' incoming freshman class.
The 5-11, 205-pound, Cavallini was known as a physical forward during his time in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) this past season, and Eaves said that that hard-nosed style of play, coupled with a strong hockey sense, makes Cavallini a welcome addition at Wisconsin.
"Aidan plays with great energy and passion," Eaves said, "but you'll notice that, even though he plays with passion, he understands the game as well. He understands how it goes together and that's a nice combination to have.
"We look for him to come in, work his way into the line-up and become an energy guy for us."
Cavallini joins the Badgers after spending the majority of the 2012-13 season with the NAHL's Brookings Blizzard, playing 34 games and notching 12 goals and 22 points. He joined Brookings mid-season after playing 19 games with the South Shore Kings of the Eastern Junior Hockey League, where he tallied two goals and five points.
During the 2011-12 campaign, Cavallini spent time with the NAHL's Alexandria Blizzard, the United States Hockey League's Chicago Steel and the British Colombia Hockey League's Langley Rivermen, scoring a total of 10 goals and 29 points in 56 combined games.
He also played 20 games in 2010-11 with the Steel, where he had three goals and six points.
Cavallini comes from a solid hockey background. His father, Gino Cavallini, played in 593 NHL games with the Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues and Quebec Nordiques from 1983 until 1994, totaling 114 career goals and 273 career points.
The St. Louis native is Wisconsin's fifth signee for the 2013-14 season, joining forwards Grant Besse (Plymouth, Minn.), Corbin McGuire (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Jedd Soleway (Vernon, British Colombia), as well as defenseman Tim Davison (De Pere, Wis.).
