Man builds tunnels to beat the heat

PORTAGE COUNTY (WKOW) -- Whether it's a heat wave or a snow storm, one Portage County man has figured out how to beat all the elements.

He built a tunnel underground that's a comfortable 55 degrees all year long.

69-year old Chuck Crawford of Almond built the tunnel 16 years ago connecting his house to his shop.

He jumps into a refurbished telephone booth that serves as an elevator to take him underground.

"If it's raining, I go through the tunnel all the time, snowing or stuff like that. I don't bother going outside," he says.

The tunnel is 96 feet long.

Crawford says over the summer, he uses fans to pull air from it to cool his shop.
